N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been known in clinical practice since the 1950s. Initially, the drug was used as a mucolytic in the treatment of respiratory pathology, and this property is most widely known and in demand. However, in addition to its mucolytic activity, NAC has other diverse chemical properties.

All the useful properties of acetylcysteine:

• An antioxidant. Acetylcysteine has been found to have an antioxidant effect, mainly due to the synthesis of glutathione. It helps neutralize free radicals that damage the cells and tissues of our body. This antioxidant is vital for the health of the immune system and the fight against cellular damage. Some researchers even believe that it promotes longevity.
• Throat and lung protection. Currently, acetylcysteine is widely used for bronchitis, laryngotracheitis, rhinosunusitis, otitis media, and as an antidote for paracetamol poisoning. A condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with prolonged oxidative damage and inflammation of the lung tissue, which leads to compression of the airways, resulting in coughing and shortness of breath. NAC supplements are used to alleviate the symptoms of COPD, as well as to prevent recurrence of the disease. • Improved immunity.Studies on a number of diseases related to NAC and glutathione deficiency have shown that taking NAC supplements can improve immune function. This point was mainly studied using the example of patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In two studies, taking NAC supplements resulted in a significant improvement in immune function with almost complete restoration of natural killer cells.Laboratory studies have shown that in other immune suppression-related conditions, such as influenza, NAC can inhibit the virus' ability to replicate. This potentially relieves symptoms and shortens the duration of the disease. Other laboratory studies have similarly linked NAC to the death of cancer cells and the prevention of their replication. • Reduction of kidney and liver damage. NAC is actively involved in the detoxification process of the body. It helps to prevent the occurrence of side effects associated with taking medications or exposure to toxins from the environment. Doctors actively practice intravenous administration of NAC to patients with an overdose of acetaminophen in order to prevent or reduce kidney and liver damage. Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, NAC is also used in the treatment of other liver diseases.
• For mental disorders.NAC helps regulate the levels of glutamate, the most important neurotransmitter in our brain. Glutamate is essential for the normal functioning of the brain.
